I am all for good physical health as I truly believe that in order to walk into our purpose and our calling that God has given to us we need to be well-able to do so. If one is sick (which is not our portion in Jesus name..amen!) it can hinder us from doing our God-given tasks and in turn.
The bible states that a healthy body is essential for good spiritual well-being! Also, that our bodies are living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1) and temples of the Holy Spirit, so we have no choice but to look after it and honour God. The bible also gives us practical tips that we can incorporate in or day to day life for good health. Below is one of many scriptures that I believe that we can all exercise to experience total wellness.
Proverbs 15:30
“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health”.
Kindness goes a long way, making others feel good can bring ‘joy’ to your heart. Existing studies have shown that acts of kindness…even just giving someone a smile can strengthen your heart physically and emotionally. This also makes one think, how much so then spiritually? Having positive facial expressions (having a cheerful look) are practical things we can do to combat the feelings of stress and anxiety which can lead to turmoil in our body. On a physiological level, having a cheerful look – helps to release neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin which induces the feeling of joy, well-being and also help relaxes your body and lower blood pressure.
Being downcast, bitter and angry can have a negative impact on your overall physical and spiritual health. From a physical health standpoint – being angry and bitter can affect your heart health and increase the risk of developing illnesses. From a spiritual health standpoint – it can make it difficult for you to hear from God, delight in the Lord and hinder God from answering out prayers. You may also be more likely to sin because of deep-rooted issues causing you to be bitter like unforgiveness.
God has given us good health, which is one of the blessings we receive as believers and it is important that we maintain it to live a positive and healthy life on this Earth. Looking after our health is an act of worship and gratitude onto God that we are thankful to God for making us well-able.
Having said this, reading, hearing and receiving the word of God (good news) can greatly contribute to one’s health because the word of God gives life (Proverbs 3:1) and through the word of God comes promises of healing and restoration. Making it a lifestyle to read the bible daily, listen to sermons and having fellowship in God’s presence enables us to preserve our perfect health.
