This quarter, as a mentee of the Eleuthera mentorship programme, I was blessed with the task of finding out who I am, according to scripture. I realised that to know who I am, I have to know more than the lyrics to Sinach’s song; I have to know the fullness of the image God intends to see in order to conform to it.
Jesus made “I am” statements and had no doubt about his identity, even though many tried to refute it. So, in an attempt to know my identity in Christ, here are my “I am” statements…
I am… a recipient of grace
Romans 1:5 – through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations
I am… Justified
Romans 4:2-5 – For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness
I am… Not identified by my sin
Romans 4:7–8 – Blessed are they whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, and whose sins are covered over. Blessed is the person against whom the Lord will never count sin.
I am… Welcome in the throne room
Romans 5:1–2 – Therefore, because we* have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand
I am… Reconciled
Romans 5:11 – And not only this, but also we are boasting in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
I am… Dead to sin
Romans 6:2 – May it never be! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
I am… Resurrected in his likeness
Romans 6:5 – For if we have become identified with him in the likeness of his death, certainly also we will be identified with him in the likeness of his resurrection,
I am… Alive with Christ, in Christ
Romans 6:8 – Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him,
I am… released from the Law of sin and death
Romans 7:6 – But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
